Job Description

General Purpose of Job: 
The paramedic is part of a professional medical team responsible for initial patient assessment and treatment in emergent and non-emergency inter-facility patient care transfers. The paramedic at Sparrow Health System is a fully licensed Paramedic with the State of Michigan, who is authorized to practice within the Tri-County Emergency Medical Control Authority (TCEMCA). The paramedic performs all the tasks and duties inherent and expected of that license and authorization approval. Some of those functions include life-saving measures and treatments with and without the resources that are normally available in the “in-house” setting. The paramedic must be able to function independently in the event of a communications failure or because the condition of the patient does not allow time for communications to be made. The paramedic must also be able to perform EMS traffic control skills as a medical dispatcher, directing and advising Sparrow and outside area EMS agency units. This position reports directly to the Ground Transport Manager.

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis.  Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Performs duties and assignments as required as a dispatcher

Job Requirements

General Requirements
  • CCEMT-P within 2 years
  • PHTLS or ITLS within 12 months
  • ABLS within 12 months
  • Valid Paramedic licensure in the State of Michigan.

Current certifications in:

  • BCLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
Work Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of field experience as a Paramedic Or Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department experience as a Paramedic
  • High School Diploma
Specialized Knowledge and Skills


  • Demonstrated competency of Venous access, EKG, and Point of Care Testing.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, families, physicians, and other Hospital Caregivers, other Sparrow Regional Health System Caregivers, and external agencies.
  • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in her/his assigned service area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience.
  • Demonstrated competency for administering 12 lead EKG, and Point of Care Testing.
  • Must be a ‘self-starter’ and assertively take on challenging responsibilities and hold self ultimately accountable for results and performance.


  • Experience in an Emergency Department and/or critical care area.
  • Associates degree.
  • Successful completion of the Sparrow Ground Transport designed MICU training which includes but is not limited to:
  • Demonstration of competency and continuing education in endotracheal intubations.
  • Titratable medication initiation and management.
  • Mechanical ventilation initiation and management.
  • Bi-pap and Hi-flow initiation and management
